Hampton Court (July 20)

Today we took a day trip out to Hampton Court Palace. This was a palace where King Henry VIII would often vacation to. It is a huge palace that has over 60 acres of beautiful gardens which run alongside the River Thames. When we first got there a my friend Tiara and I went to Mary II’s apartments where we learned about the clothing that was worn during that time period. It was a live re-enactment and they had an example for the women and for the men. A few of the more interesting facts that I remember were that the women had to have their hair up and covered. They believed that the bible directed them to do so and if they were to wear their hair down they were considered “mad.” Also, they never washed their dresses. The only part that they would wash was the undergarments or the linens. Often if they were to get dirty they would use bread to clean the stains. Bread worked especially well on oil stains.
