After that adventure we went to Stonehenge. This was really great. You see so many pictures of this in your life but how many people actually get to go see it. 7-8,000 years ago the area where Stonehenge is was an area of pines and hazel woodland. They know this from evidence from several Mesolithic pits discovered in the late 1960s. The monument itself is said to be about 5,000 years old. Of course nobody knows for sure its purpose or how it got there but there were some pretty interesting suggestions that we learned about. Some believed that it is the work of aliens; others believe that the devil himself built the monument. And others believe that the stones have special healing powers. It was all very interesting. My favorite thing about it is that it was built to line up exactly with the winter and summer solstices. So on the shortest and longest day of the year the sun will rise and set exactly over the center stone.
